Thursday we battled against a very strong headwind for about 500km from Karratha through Port Hedland, the Pardoo Roadhouse and the Sandfire Roadhouse .The wind then disappeared as we drove to our free camp at the Stanley Rest Area some 108km north of Sandfire. The sky looked very threatening and so we parked our van on a concrete slab in case of rain - it rained quite heavily through the night.
Friday we drove through some heavy rain to Broome. We had planned a quick shopping stop here but the weather was so bad that we figured the rest areas beyond would probably be a nightmare - while we were having a coffee to consider our next move we discovered that our neighbour was the owner of the Cable Beach Caravan Park - he rang the park and so we have a site for the night. We hear that the road to Fitzroy Crossing is open but roadworks have forced an 8km side track which is very wet and vehicles are being escorted through the area thirty at a time - first one direction then the other. We set off tomorrow - hopefully the delays will still allow us time to get to Fitzroy Crossing.
