Alice Springs to Mataranka

The Blog? Oh yes, but we can only update this when we have phone coverage. For the last two nights we have been free-camping in remote NT so have been unable to blog.

Tuesday we drove from Alice Springs to the free-camp at Devils Marbles. When we first arrived around 3pm there were about fifteen caravans on site but there was a constant stream of arrivals from then on - we were all waiting for the magnificent sunset and sunrise.
Although quite a few people were camped here it was very quiet and we had many enjoyable chats with our neighbours. Our immediate neighbour was a young aboriginal man who works for the Land Council as an anthropologist. His story of life in a 'community' was very interesting.
Sunset Tuesday night was magnificent!
Sunrise Wednesday morning was equally beautiful and we can only hope that our photos do the colours justice.
We then set off for Tennant Creek where we visited the very interesting Aboriginal Cultural Centre and Museum. Here we had an enjoyable chat with a German doctor and her husband who are in Australia to check on the welfare of their nineteen year old daughter who is working her way through outback Australia (it is very common for European students to do this before beginning their University studies). Then just out of town to Mary Anne Dam for lunch. A little further on we came across a caravan and car, still hooked on, upside down on the wrong side of the road - we could only guess how that happened - people were OK.
We decided to free-camp again, this time at Newcastle Waters. We arrived at the rest area around 4pm and were lucky to get a spot. This is the way most caravanners travel these days.
We used the generator for the first time to power up the fridge, computer and fridge battery.
Thursday we travelled through Daly Waters to Mataranka, set up camp and had a swim in the thermal pools. It was also a chance to catch up on interesting tales from fellow travellers.
