Karratha - Dampier

Just a short drive to-day into Dampier where 'it all happens'.
We see the harbour/marina with huge salt piles in the background - there are many, enormous ponds producing salt here.
We then ventured onto the Burrup Peninsula to view the iron ore loader and Hearons Cove. The peninsula has many hills which are covered in unusual rocks which make for a very attractive vista.
We next visited the 'North West Shelf Venture' Visitors Centre to gain some understanding of the enormity of our gas and oil processing facilities, both on-shore and off-shore. It is huge! It was interesting to learn that the gas is cooled to -160 degrees for ease of handling. The revenue is a staggering $10 billion per year!
Gas is piped down the coast as far as Perth and Bunbury and is also exported.
This is our last day in Karratha - tomorrow we resume our journey home - we hear that the road is closed near Fitzroy Crossing because of heavy rains. We hope it opens within the next two or three days.
