Port Hedland

The 'Lonely Planet' describes Port Hedland as the 'frumpy spouse of Newman' - perhaps this is a fair description.
Iron ore is railed from Newman to the BHP Billiton facility at Port Hedland and then loaded onto ships for overseas steelmakers. The world record length of these trains was set at Port Hedland in around 2001 - it was 7.35 km long!!
Rio Tinto also produces salt here in huge ponds.
We visited Koombana lookout, Redbank Bridge lookout, Marapikurrinya Park, Dalgety House Museum and on the way home, Pretty Pool.
We have decided to leave here a day earlier than planned. To-morrow we set off for Karijini National Park.
