We flew from Darwin Airport on a 10-seater plane to Nguiu Airport on Bathurst Island.
Bathurst Island and Melville Island are home to the Tiwi people.
An orientation tour of the town was followed by a visit to their museum and then morning tea with our Tiwi hosts. The women had prepared damper which the men then cooked in the coals.
We then spent some time chatting with these people, learning about their culture, watching them weave pandanus into baskets, learning the significance of their dances and discussing the relative merits of our AFL teams. They are delightful people, very happy and welcoming.
We visited their art workshops - painting, pottery and woodwork.
Lunch at the grounds of the old Catholic Mission was followed by a swim at a 'safe' waterhole, afternoon tea and then our flight home in a 5-seater hugging the coastline.
